Autumn Harvest

Enlarge these for a close-up view.
On a recent camping trip I enjoyed watching this Chicaree or Douglas Squirrel.  I had to watch my head, though, for first he threw them on the ground.

It almost looked like he was eating corn on the cob.
He rips off the scales to get at the seeds.
Eventually he notices me watching him.
He runs off with the pine cone.  It must weigh more than the squirrel.

To see more critters, head on over to Camera Critters, hosted for us by Misty Dawn.

  1. How fun to catch it in the act. These are excellent captures.

I watched a Kaibab squirrel playing today. No pics as it was through a window screen. So fun to watch the wildlife.

  4. Cool series of pictures. When I was in the Boy Scouts when we lived in the White Mountains of Arizona. Our big fund raiser was collecting pine cones for the Forest Service. We got them from caches the squirrels made. The rangers assured us that they hid a lot more pine cones than they could possibly eat but we still felt guilty.

  7. Great shots Martha. You have the patience of an angel (or a National Geographic photographer!)

It looks EXACTLY as if he's eating corn on the cob!

  10. How adorable. One of their favorite foods is corn on the cob so he initially may have thought that's what it was. Great capture. He is a cutie.

  15. Great photos of the busy little squirrel. It's funny to see him making off with that huge (compared to him) pine cone.
