Sacramento has grown into a large metropolitan area. To the visitor it may look like one big city.
Dig a little deeper and you will find a collection of smaller communities with old town centers at their core.
We recently visited one of these towns. We had breakfast at Fair Oaks Village. The town had been promoted as a citrus growing area in the late 19th and early 20th century by investors in Chicago and Sacramento. Freezes in the 1930s ended the citrus industry but other business took its place.
One of the first things we noticed were the chickens. They inhabit the area around the Plaza Park, encouraged by people who come to feed them.
Also at the Plaza Park is this beautiful mural at the edge of the amphitheater, an outdoor venue for community theater.
The Park is surrounded by historic buildings housing cafes and shops.
I thought this antique shop had a lot of character.

I've always liked the old buildings in Sacto. My Grandparents lived there.
ReplyDeleteWe always loved visiting Sacramento although I don't remember this neighborhood. It has been too long and your post makes me want to go again....
ReplyDeleteNice post. I really love the chickens. It is kind of interesting that many urban areas have little downtowns that were the kernel from which the bigger area grew.

ReplyDeleteI went to UC Davis many years ago. Since we have family in the Sacramento area, we visit fairly often but I still remember the empty fields that used to be there. It doesn't look much like it did when I first saw it!

ReplyDeleteSo there are chickens running around the town square? The dogs would have a field day! I think they are lovely, though!! I have been reading books about when the towns were smaller, when these villages would have been separate. it was a different time, all right...

ReplyDeleteMany large cities are really an incorporation of many smaller original towns, which now become urban villages. With their old main streets and old buildings, they lend charm to metropolitan areas.
