Power of Water

In Fall the Merced does not thunder over Vernal Falls as it did in Spring.
This gentler flow allows me to appreciate the fall and and the way it has sculpted the rock.
Approaching the base I can see how the granite has been polished by thousands of years of water crashing down.
I view the sculpted forms and am mesmerized by the way the water flows over the rocks and through the cracks.
As the breeze blows the drops of water, the rainbow shifts, growing and shrinking in the mist.

It is interesting to see what the water has done to the rocks. It must be wonderful to watch and listen to the water falling.

We always want to be there in the spring when the water-fall is at its thunderous best...but, then the polished rock isn't as visible because of so much water...this is really a nice trade-off. Beautiful shots!

How spectactular! I Especially like those lower closer in shots--looks like the water just sliced off a whole piece of rock!

I was at the falls in autumn last year, too. Not quite the spectacular flow of water as during springtime! Your shots are very nice...some of them quite abstract looking, especially the close up ones. Nice work. Hope you had fun.

Cool shots, Martha. They could be used for a geology lesson--especially the close-up that shows the (much) earlier fracture that allowed the curved bit to slip down. This is the same principle that quarriers use to free up blocks of marble: create cracks and infuse them with water to "carve" the rock from its base. Of course, this is much, much prettier.
