Foggy Sky Shots

I have been complaining a lot lately about the fog and gloom.
Most mornings this is the view. Later in the day the fog may lift a bit and we have gloomy low clouds.
We thought we would go for a drive up into the Sierra foothills, hoping to punch through the fog. I spied this emu in the fog.
We climbed higher, to Hidden Falls Regional Park. Still no sun and very limited visibility. What's a photo blogger to do?
We drove on to the historic gold country town of Auburn which is also the county seat. The beautiful old court house was shrouded in fog. We decided to get some lunch.
After lunch we saw blue sky and sunshine! Hurray! It didn't last long, maybe an hour and then the fog rolled in again. By the time we got home the world was gray again.
Find more interesting skies at Sky Watch Friday, hosted for us by Klaus, Sandy, Wren, Fishing Guy, Louise and Sylvia.

  2. You might have found that fog gloomy but, believe me, to a desert dweller who grew up in San Francisco, they were very nostalgic. I could just feel the cool dampness on my skin. Thank you for sharing.

  3. The building looks much cheerier in the sunlight. At least you got to see a little blue sky.
Love the shot of the emu in the fog.

  5. I am loving the fog images, especially the emu. That old courthouse is a beautiful building and I see how the sunlight does add warmth to its colors.

  6. I love fog but I understand after a while it can get old. The emu was quite a capture. All good shots. I like the old courthouse in the fog but it's so beautiful that nice to see it in a brighter light too.

  7. Wonderful photos.
Fog makes the moment stand so very still it feels like the courthouse could tell all the stories of the past while enshrouded so.

  9. Guess you and I had better love foggy pictures because we surely have been having plenty of them to photograph. Yours are gorgeous! But wasn't it fun to catch just a few rays of sun? Hope you have a great weekend -- and a little sun, just for kicks!

  10. I also hate the grey days during the winter. I would rather have the cold clear ones. Glad the sun came out and warmed you attitude.

  11. Oh I love these foggy days, and yes, it was thick this morning. But suddenly midway to my commute to Oakland, the sun was up and the fog was nowhere to be found.

I always admire the Auburn courthouse from I-80 and so one time we went inside the city and parked the car and just looked at the building and snapped a few shots.

  12. I did an about take at the Emu photo, Martha - thought you were kidding. I enlarged and see the fence. Was it some kind of preserve? i find the fog magical, actually (unless I'm driving in it...)

  13. Foggy, but still awesome. I love the fog, but maybe that's because we don't see it often. Great SWF!

  14. I like foggy pictures too. There is an element of mystery in them. The emu seems to be just standing around waiting for you to show up with your camera. We used to have a lot of fog in the Inland Empire area, but, now it is rare or very light. I miss the good old thick fog, but I was a kid then...who cared about safety back then?

  15. Definately worth a drive to see a bit of sunshine after many foggy days. Yet the fog photos are all very dreamy like. We had thunder, lightning, hail and rain last night, sunny today with a crisp NW breeze. Nice captures Martha.

  19. The fog reminds me of growing up in California. What an unusual picture - an emu in the fog. I lived for when the fog would clear up, but now that I live in Arizona and do not see fog too often, I enjoy it much more then I did when I lived in CA.

  21. I do like the misty foggy look to these shots, but I must admit that sunshine makes the building come alive. Love the emu.

  22. The fog shots are beautiful, but I am just scared to drive. Great photo of the emu, and the contrasting weather shots of the building. Such an unpredictable weather.
P.S. We did not have rain on Wednesday, but probably in the early morning while I was asleep. No rain still.

  24. You are so lucky to get your blue sky back! Here in Port Orchard, it has rained every day fo my visit. Yesterday the fog hung around all day and in the late afternoon it poured down like crazy BUT for about a half hour, there was a patch of blue in the sky near son's house. Not for long tho. I had a wodnerful hike in the morning and no rain but when I went out again in the afternoon, I got soaked hiking.

  26. The fog has a interesting eerie quality. I'm glad you finally found some sunshine, though. This time of year seems to be frustrating for many of us who like to take photos!

  32. Well, sometimes the contrast between gloom and clarity is what makes it worthwhile.

Glad you ended up in the sun. We're promised some today, but no sign of it yet.

  33. This fog gives photos some mood and character. Either that or you just perfectly conquered this obstacle.
