Heron at the Hunt

Low light at the end of the day required a slow shutter, this gave the cascading water a smooth blur while the heron's still, patient stance meant there was virtually no blur of the bird.  The late afternoon shadows give the shot a blue cast which could have been corrected but I rather like it as it is.

The water looks like silk, Martha. Did you use a tripod? The heron is perfect.

I have never learned to use the shutter and aperture priority.

Great job on the cascading effect of the water. So that's what you should do to get that effect.

Barb, yes I try to use a tripod when the light is poor but if the subject is moving I have to rely on the image stabilizing feature of the lens.

Ewok, yes, you need a slow shutter to get that smooth effect of the water. In bright sun it is not possible unless you use a neutral density filter.

It is a great shot and would look great as a painting. The Heron is a patient hunter.

Looks like the heron is on a look with something, for sure it's the fish.

I hope one day to get close enough to a heron to get a photo that will fill the frame, with cropping of course. I love looking at them, in real life and photos. They are lovely, graceful birds.

Martha, this shot is Excellent! I love how the smooth blur of fast water enhances the stillness of the heron.

Great shot. I like the silky water and the intent bird. I'm another one who doesn't mess with the speed and aperture and perhaps should.

You are such a good photographer! I never fail to be amazed at the way the great blues can stand so perfectly still for such a long time.
