It is time again for another Yosemite post. I never tire of this place and we try to visit at least twice a year.
In past years our Autumn visit has always found Yosemite Falls dry. The rocky ground in the high country from which this feature gets its water relies on snow melt. There is no soil to hold the moisture and release it slowly. Whether it was due to the heavy snow pack this year or the late summer thunderstorms, there was still water flowing over the falls.
It was a real treat for the late season tourists and for us as well.
Though not the thundering rush of spring I found the reduced flow to have a charm I don't experience in May or June.
Yosemite Falls was not the only place where water was unexpectedly present. The "lake" in Mirror Lake was gone as usual but there was still water flowing through on its way to join the Merced River.
One didn't have to look too hard to find a pool with a reflection.
It may have been the beginning of Autumn, but the park was filled with tourists from all around the world. I was pleased that for once these late season visitors had not missed out on some of Yosemite's best know wonders.

We missed all that water last year, but I recall some similar near Mirror Lake. Our son and family had plans for going to Yosemite and stay in the cabins. We must plan to come again. How early in the spring would you recommend?

Martha, I'm not sure the comment I made went through. So - I'll try again. I like the delicate veil of the falls coming off the high rock. Enjoy your trip to the cabin. It seems like yesterday that you walked through drifts to get to it, and now you must winterize! Summer and fall are just too short at altitude.
I love seeing special places like this in all the seasonal moods.

Hi there - I have such great memories of this place. I arrived in the park at night, under an almost full moon. The spire of El Cap looked like a spike of ice. Just remarkable.
I need to go back!

Thank you Martha for taking us to this wonderful place.Sometimes, as with the waterfall, less is more since the reduced flow shows a softer side, or even the underbelly of the falls leaping clear. A lovely post altogether.
We stayed there for 4 days in September 1985 and it was so beautiful, the falls had plenty of water flowing then. We had been lucky enough to get a cancellation on spec. If I had had the money to buy a place there I'd never have left.

Seeing these photos brings back great memories of my own trips to Yosemite. And Mirror lake was almost dry when I was there too.
It seems odd to have that massive bare rock face, and that little fall to the one side. But there is a charm to it...
Lovely reflection shot. I love Yosemite. The falls do have a surprising amount of water for this late in the year.
When I was a kid, my parents had a poster that looked just like your first image. I always wondered where it was from, but now I know. Beautiful!
