We avoid urban areas most of the time but I do love small towns, especially the ones that seem caught in a past era.
Southern Oregon has a cluster of three towns. Medford is the urban commercial hub, a place we avoided. Ashland is the artistic town, host to the Ashland Shakespeare Festival and Jacksonville is a small town that tries to attract tourists by preserving its early mining town heritage.
I liked the display in this barber shop window. Black Bart had been a local stagecoach robber in the nineteenth century and who couldn't enjoy the barbershop memorabilia.
Do you remember these? I do. There was one in front of the local drug store when I was a child.

I like a town that dresses up for Halloween. This one is lucky to have so much memorabilia.
What a fun post for the season, Martha! Love those little towns in Oregon! They do have a lot of color and fun history!

I've been to Jacksonville and love the old western town atmosphere better than the big towns you mentioned. Looks like a perfect place to spend Halloween. Sort of like Kanab. And yes, I do remember the scales of fortune.
I like Jacksonville. Did you make it out to the cemetery? Very interesting.
Thank you very much for this interesting journey and escape. Please have you all a good new month.
Like you, I love the small rural towns. This one looks like a beaut!
I like the small town charm.
I love it when the downtown decorates for Halloween and the little children march from store to store for their candies. It is such a festive day. Your images are so happy. They give me that feel good feeling before going to bed. Thanks for the comments. genie
So - you did go to OR? We were going to visit Ashland but cut our trip because of all the rain. I like these old-timey buildings.
such a cute Halloween post! Oregon is the place to be for Halloween magic!
hee hee...
Yes, «Louis» remembers the "Character Readings" machines!
A fascinating little town, I like the pumpkin head lady! The plaque with the info on the two wells and the cistern was interesting, I was able to read most of it.
Nice shots..!
Cool Math
Magnificent, I say!!!
I DO love that elegant lady taking her tea!!
When we were on our way out of Oregon last week we were talking about all the places we missed going to (and next year we're going to go to -- but we say that every Fall). Anyway we loved visiting J'ville when we lived in Springfield. There used to be a great summer music festival there. Maybe still.
You captured the feel of the town!
