Almost Old

Now I'm 64, one more year until medi-care.
I have mixed emotions about that. It will probably save us a little money on our health insurance but it will mean that in the eyes of the government and society I will be officially old even if I do have to wait another year for full Social Security.
I don't feel old. Oh, sure, the joints and muscles are a little stiff in the morning. I don't run anymore. Fifty mile bike rides are in my past but I can still do 25 miles. I can still hike 10 miles. I'm still up for an adventure. Wasn't it Zorba the Greek that said the inside Zorba is still young.
Why do people in their thirties get up and offer me a seat? Why do motel clerks ask if we can handle the stairs? And why do younger hikers say "I hope I can do that when I'm your age"?
I know I should be honored but some how it just makes me feel, well, old.
I'm not going to let it slow me down, though. I'm ready for the next challenge, the next adventure.

Happy Birthday! Great picture, looks like you are both ready for many more adventures! Chris likes the questions you ask in the fourth paragraph.

Did you just turn 64 Martha? Well - take some advise from your elder - me! I turned 65 in May - am now officially a Medicare recipient. So far, take no meds, feel great most of the time, and try not to act my age! I'm determined to be a bad girl after 64 years of being good. Want to join me?

I presume that you just celebrated your birthday. I had that one in January. . . you two look pretty darn good to me! Keep on keeping on and tell your "buddy" hello from me.

Thanks for dropping by my blog. I will check out yours a bit more too.

At 64, you are the new middle age. Here is a quote I really like: “You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubts; as young as your self-confidence, as old as your despair. In the central place of your heart, there is a recording chamber. So long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, and courage, so long you are young.” Douglas MacArthur.

I so relate to this post and don't see you (or me) as OLD by any measure. I'll celebrate my 65th birthday in February and need to figure out 'insurance stuph' in the next few months. Happy belated birthday ;--)
Hugs and blessings,
