The weather cleared and we drove up to Donner Summit Beautiful bright blue skies with high clouds. Do you see that dark line partway down the mountain?
I’ll enlarge it so you can get a better view.
This is a snow shed for the railroad. You might have heard that Donner Pass can get A LOT of snow at times. The snow shed protects the trains from avalanches.
More skies can be found at Sky Watch Friday, hosted for us by Klaus,Sandy, Wren, Fishing Guy and Sylvia.

What a great post! Thank you!
Love the beautiful blue peeking through the white :)
The manner of cloud formation is just wonderful and you've managed to capture the moments brilliantly!
Pixellicious Photos
Love the mountain and wonderful skies!
Fantastic captures, Martha! Does remind me of the sad history of Donner Pass, but how beautiful it is! Really terrific post for the day! Hope you have a great weekend!

Oh my golly, the skies and mountains are so beautiful! (Looks cold, though!)
The shed sounds like an excellent idea! The sky and the terrain are beautiful!
Lovely cloudscape. I am too busy these days to go up to the mountains. Im afraid I'll miss the snow this year.

This is fabulous! It's been so long since I was on that highway. The sky is just awesome and glamorizes the scenery beyond words.
These are gorgeous shots, Martha! Lov ethe sky and those pretty mountains.
This set of shots make me go wow!
Beautiful sky. Snowshed shot is cool also. Appeals to the engineer in me.
sigh...what a joy it must have been to breath the clean air. Could be that I said something alike once again, yet it remains what I do miss much over here.
Interesting also that the German word Donner means thunder, one might like to imagine the sound travelling from mountain to moutain.
Please have you all a wonderful Friday.
Hearing the name of course reminds me of the tragic history of that pass, but all looks peaceful against a beautiful blue sky.
Fabulous winter shots, well done.
All the best

great snowy mountains, and I love how you captured the movement of the clouds in the sky! Happy Skywatch =)
I had not heard about a snow shed for trains before, but then I live in the desert so what do I know ;^)
Martha: Wonderful post and great skies over the mountain.
Amazing scenery and a refreshing winter.
Great captures Martha.
Have a wonderful day and weekend.
Amazing California skies you captured that day!
Oh, what lovely mountain views! The clouds are so happy they look like they are dancing with glee!

I hope you will accept this award.
Those are wonderful sky shots over the snow shed. I like the way you can see all the trees as well as snow and magnificent sky.
Beautiful pictures -- and uh, yeah I've heard about a few people getting snowbound thereabouts ;>).
simply beautiful...as if nature used its paintbrush
Fabulous views
Great photos, Martha, beautiful winter scenes.
Beautiful vista!

The Summit is gorgeous but being afraid of heights I'm always a little wary of traveling up there.
I don't think I ever saw a Skywatch post for Donner Pass. The sky sure was beautiful for your visit. The snow shed is a good idea for that area.
Beautiful photos!
Wonderful sky views of this historic scene ... I do love this area but haven't visited in quite some time. Love your wonderful header photo too!
Hugs and blessings,
My Sky Watch
Beautiful skies. This meme has me looking up all the time. Travel in the mountains can be problematical at certain times.
Remember Skate Creek Road from
Ashford to Packwood to get to the other side of Mt. Rainier last summer? They did not close it this winter as they usually do. Ha. Road not closed means road is passable, right? Not for the squeamish. We went up about a mile, then slid back down to Ashford for another night.
Hi Martha, I liked seeing Donner Pass - it doesn't seem to have much snow this year. I'll be crossing it in a couple months.
