A watery tale

The creek that runs down the ravine behind our house usually looks

like this.

Recently it started to look like this. What's going on? We haven't had rain to bring the creek up.

I think I know.

There's the culprit!

A beaver has moved into the neighborhood.

He's cute and the birds like the habitat he has created but he will destroy the few trees we have in the open area.

That kind of situation can be a problem.

Martha - what a great photo capture! I crossed at a beaver dam this morning when I was snowshoeing in Breckenridge. I thought of an acquaintance who carried her bike across a dam in the summer - the beaver came out & bit her! Guess he didn't like the intrusion.
Have a great trip to Yosemite. Will there still be snow? Take lots of pics. We were there briefly 3 years ago in August - my first visit. It was very busy.

They're clever creatures but I believe they can cause havoc.

Oh what a cutie. I wonder if you heard about the beavers living in the city of Martinez. Anyway, keep us posted on the goings-on around the backyard.

A wonderful series of photos. How fortunate you were to get photos of the beaver. You are correct that they are considerably larger than my muskrat. One resource I read today said muskrats are less than 10% as heavy as a beaver. Thanks for stopping by.

I like the new look. The beaver got paid for his work in trees. :)

He is really amazing. What a great photo essay. It there a way to protect the trees?
We have squirrels where the only danger is getting a stripped pinecone dropped on one's head. Our dog can sniff them out even 50 feet up a tree & will wait & wait until she spots them.
BTW - so glad you liked the photos of downtown LA & thanks for sharing the memories.

Ohh a beaver, we don't have these creatures in New Zealand, he looks rather like an otter - we don't have them either, pity he will fell all your trees to dam the stream, but he might bring a small family up within the dam he creates. That would be nice.
He is so cute.

Beaver are hard to live with when we move into their habitat, or they move back into what they lost so many years ago. Over time, the pond fills and the aspens grow back. But in human time, it's "devastating" when the Castor family moves in...
