A Few Shadows

It's been awhile since I've seen any good shadows to share but last week there were several that caught my eye.

First I noticed this shadow of Hubby's feet as the morning sun came through the window by his chair at the cabin.

Later, out on the deck, I liked the shadow of the glass topped table.  (I know, the deck needs painting, again.)

Later, while taking a stroll near the Tioga Road, we saw the results of a winter avalanche.  The snow had broken off this little tree but the tree was shielding its assassin from the sun leaving a  mound of snow underneath.

Antelope Slot Canyon

The last stop on our tour was Antelope Slot Canyon, a place of light and shadow I had long wished to visit.

This in on the Navajo Nation and can only be visited with a Navajo guide.  It's a place that cries for HDR processing so for the rest of these images I took my RAW file, made +2 and -2 images in the RAW converter and then used tone compressor in Photomatix.

Several Navajo companies have rights to lead tours here so it is very crowded.  You can get a longer tour that allows you to set up a tripod but that wasn't an option for us.  The companies each have other slot canyons they can visit which are less crowded but again, that wasn't an option for our group.

You could get an unobstructed view by looking up.

Our guide knew all the tricks, he showed us this heart shaped slot.

He threw sand on this ledge for a "sandfall".

Empire Mine Cottage Door

I liked the shadows made by the stepped pattern of the brickwork around the cottage door.  Of Course, the garland had a nice shadow as well.

Shadows at the Pond

We are fortunate that our community has so much open space, so many places where we can view natures creatures.  We've been going to the ponds lately, to enjoy the variety of wildlife.  It's a little far for our daily walk so we try to combine it with other errands.

Shadows and Reflections at Norton Simon Museum

These memes help us to see things we might otherwise miss.  The sculptures at the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena were wonderful on their own.

 They could be appreciated yet again reflected in the pond.

 The light shining on the brass sculpture is wonderful and the sinuous shape can be appreciated a second time in the shadow on the wall.

 These angular shadows are harder to understand.

The sculptures that made them are interesting and leave the interpretation to the viewer.

I apologize that I did not write down the name of the artists.  I had hoped that the museum website would have photos to help in the identification but, no luck.

Wet Shadow

I hiked with friends up towards Duck Pass in the Mammoth Lakes area.  As usual I was on the lookout for shadows.  I found this one at Skelton Lake.

Shadows in a Parking Garage

We try to bundle errands, Hubby and I.  Sometime this leaves one of us killing time.

In anticipation of this I brought my camera to hunt photos while Hubby was being measured for new lenses prior to cataract surgery.

The parking structure proved to be a good source for shadows.

I got my photos, Hubby got his measurements and we went on to do my errands saving the half gallon of gas that would have been required to each go separately.

I was thinning the nectarines in this tree when this little goldfinch flew from her nest. No more thinning for now, I'll leave her in peace.

Shadows on the Dunes

Sand dunes make a great pallet for shadows.

The dune plants cast a shadow if the sun is out.

Tracks in the sand are defined by their shadow.  People passed by here.

But who came by here?  A snake, perhaps, in pursuit of a rabbit?

Here we can see who is making a track, crossing the shadow of ripples in the sand as well as those of other creatures living in this hostel environment.

Shadow Shot Sunday

We had some sunny days this week. Sunshine means shadows and a chance to get back on the bikes.

We managed to get in three rides last week. Nice conditioning rides of about 12 miles. We didn't want to over do it as the two months of cold and fog had gotten us out of biking condition.
Our rides took us beyond the trails in Sun City to a trail past emerald hills where the still naked oaks cast their long winter shadows.
