Impressionist Reflections

We saw a great art show while in Yosemite--"Yosemite Renaissance"
I was inspired to try something a bit different.
Soft light and ripples in the water allowed me to make some interesting, almost painterly, images of the reflections in the Merced River.
Follow the link above to see what the creative artists of "Yosemite Renaissance" did last year in a variety of mediums.  If you find yourself in Yosemite between now and May 5, stop and see the current exhibit at the museum.  You might find yourself inspired as I did.

Reflection at Morro Bay

No time to frame this shot as the killdeer took off at my approach.  I like the color reflected in the water and the quality of the light at the end of the day.  I just wish I had been able to frame it better.

Foucault Pendulum

When I was a child we would visit the Griffith Observatory from time to time.  I was always fascinated by the Foucault Pendulum
I still am.  I am not alone, it is a magnet for most who enter the observatory.
As the pendulum moves back and forth, the earth is turning beneath it.  About every 8 minutes the earth has rotated enough that a pin on the bottom of the pendulum knocks over another of the tiles at the left.
The shiny ball of the pendulum reflects the newly restored Hugo Ballin Murals in the dome of the rotunda.

Reflection

There are different types of reflections
On this meme we usually deal with reflections off a shinny surface like the reflection here off June lake.  But I never travel the June Lake Loop without experiencing another type of reflection, one of the mind.
When we arrive at this picnic site at Silver Lake I remember a day over 20 years ago and a picnic with my parents.
Jim Wagner

That day I captured some of my favorite images of my dad,
Pat Wagner

My mom
Jules
And my spouse.
My parents are both gone now but I cherish their memory and these images of a wonderful day at Silver Lake.

Reflecting on a Reflection

While Jules was fueling the van I noticed this unusual reflection in the side-view mirror and did a double take.
Did you notice what is unusual?  The lettering is not backwards because it is a reflection of a reflection.

Reflecting the Sun

From our family room we noticed this reflection of the setting sun in the windows of a house across the way.

In a Driveway

While out walking with grandson Michael, I saw the evening sky reflected in the window of a minivan.

Shadows and Reflection

Last month I noticed these great shadows and reflection at the entrance to our community lodge.  I guess I could link it to SkyWatch as well but will limit it to

Reflections at Hoover Dam

The copper tinted windows in the buildings at Hoover Dam had some great reflections.

Here I caught a reflection of part of the new bridge an a worker hanging from some ropes.

No, actually it is a monument to those who built the dam that is reflected.
In the background you can see the new bridge and all the people on it.  Unfortunately, the parking lot allowing access to walk the bridge is small and there was no parking space for us there.

Found in a puddle

A gentleman at the Indian museum suggested I look for the reflection of Yosemite Falls in some puddles nearby.  I did and found some very nice ones but later saw this reflection on the path to Lower Yosemite Falls.

Shadows and Reflections at Norton Simon Museum

These memes help us to see things we might otherwise miss.  The sculptures at the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena were wonderful on their own.
They could be appreciated yet again reflected in the pond.
The light shining on the brass sculpture is wonderful and the sinuous shape can be appreciated a second time in the shadow on the wall.
These angular shadows are harder to understand.
The sculptures that made them are interesting and leave the interpretation to the viewer.
I apologize that I did not write down the name of the artists.  I had hoped that the museum website would have photos to help in the identification but, no luck.

Forest Reflections

The lodge in Talkeetna had a casement window, opened perpendicular to the building.  I was fascinated in the way it reflected the forest, twice because of the double glazing.  I thought it looked a bit like a Christmas card in grey scale.

Reflections on Day Two of our Alaska Adventure

On day two I found an abundance of reflections.
The plan was to kayak across the lagoon and hike to the toe of the glacier.  In spite of the weather, that is what we did, the guide, a fellow traveler and I.
Along the way we passed several kettle ponds.  These were formed when large pieces of ice calved off retreating glaciers, were surrounded by sediment and later melted.
Rushes grew in many of the ponds, it's hard to see where the rush ends and the reflection begins.
The weather hadn't improved when we reached the toe of the glacier.
I enjoyed seeing the reflection of the ice in the water.
Nearby was a stream and wetland with a lovely area of flowers.

We enjoyed a quick view of the flowers and headed back.  It was starting to rain.  We were dressed for the weather and not uncomfortable.
